General Information

The Legislative Committee is a standing committee of the Council; all member are also Council members. David Hanson is the Chair of the Legislative Committee, which also includes Dorothy Lowman, David Crabbe, Dale Myer, and Dan Wolford. (View the full list of Council Standing Committees).

The Legislative Committee tracks Federal (and, rarely, state) legislation that affects fishery management off the West Coast. The committee drafts letters responding to Congressional requests for comment.

Council Priorities for Magnuson-Stevens Act (MSA) Reauthorization

The Magnuson‐Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA) is the principal law governing marine fisheries in the United States. The Act is due to be reauthorized, and the Council has spent a considerable amount of time discussing its priorities regarding the reauthorization. The Council has developed this set of priorities, which it continues to refine.

Federal Legislation

The Council keeps a database of current Federal fisheries legislation, which it updates regularly:

Occasionally the Council is asked by a member of Congress to comment on Federal legislation (the Council may not formally comment unless asked by a member of Congress).  We have sent the following letters on reauthorization of the Magnuson-Stevens Act and other legislation.
